Abstract

OLIVEIRA, Solange de. Arthur Bispo: memories of a salvation. Ide (São Paulo) [online]. 2014, vol.36, n.57, pp. 179-189. ISSN 0101-3106.

During his passage through the earth, Arthur Bispo do Rosario participated in several categories of exclusion: race, social origin, clinical condition, social status, all of them properly transmuted by the force of the truth of his work, that encourages and mobilizes the perception, requesting different aspects of the universe of human expressions. The conducting line of this work addresses the artwork giving a secondary role to the pathology and relativizing it. This way, it adopts as perspective the voice of the exclusion. This work priorizes the reflection over the art making and the "bedeuten" (meaning) in its most intimate and profound sense, articulating personal and social memory with the concepts of art resignified and imbricated through the point of view of an inmate of a psychiatric institution and, in consequence, alienated from the world. The textile artwork of Bispo do Rosario is the portrait of the Brazil shortly after the abolition of slavery, a country in which is present a rustic form of Catholicism, craft traditions and folklore. His work is interpose imposed, for its richness of expression, as a potential instrument for reflection on social, humanitarian and of course aesthetic questions.
