Abstract

BICHARA, Ilka Dias. Play and culture: Xocó and Mocambo children's make-believe. Temas psicol. [online]. 1999, vol.7, n.1, pp. 57-63. ISSN 1413-389X.

Make-believe playing implies the construction of areality, which is shared with the chikTs playmates. Studies involving different realities are rare and sociocultural differences are generally regarded as defíciency signs instead of behaviour variations. This work has aimed at studying possible variations due to cultural factors in two communities of Sergipe backwoods - Xocó's Indian community and Mocambo, a black people's community. Sixty children were observed in their free outdoor activities with a video camera in both communities. Results indicated that play was strongly influenced by parents way of life. Realistic subjects prevailed over fantasy ones, and a strong gender stereotype was detected. These results were consistent with our hypotheses about some existing particularities in the development, that are associated with the cultural and familiar environment of the children.

Keywords : play; make-believe play; culture.
