Abstract

FANTINI, João Angelo. The decline of "the name of the father": violence and trespassing at the turn of the century. Temas psicol. [online]. 2001, vol.9, n.3, pp. 211-221. ISSN 1413-389X.

At the turn of this century, violence and trespassing are themes that occupy a considerable part of the content broadcasted through the media. These themes are mostly shown from a reductive and superficial perspective, offering to the public an exhibition of images which exhaust themselves in a certain type of theatrical indignation, in the case of violence, or a sequence of performances apparently "against the system", in the case of trespassing. They seem to bring more revenues to the author the more "outside" they are from the perspective of show-business. How do these subjects relate to the "paternal image"? For psychoanalysis, the paternal image supports the symbolic law in culture, which is the same as to say that the kind of truculence that finds its expression in violence or in the endeavors to surmount/trespass the status quo relates necessarily to the symbolic law, and consequently to the paternal image. We consider that the movies are that the privileged locus for exposing this coflictive aspects of this past century are the movies, as was literature at the end of the 19th century

Keywords : father; violence; psychoanalysis.
