This article aimed at investigating the comprehension that military firemen in Florianópolis have about their professional choice. This occupation was selected due to its great importance for public security. This is an exploratory-descriptive research. Gathering and analysis of data were done quantitatively and qualitatively. The participants of this research were firemen from the 1st and 2nd companies of the 1st fire department, 266 of whom answered a semi-structured questionnaire. It was possible to conclude that the factors which most influenced their professional choice related to the contents of the occupation and/ or were random. It was also verified that the professional choice and the occupation itself are essential factors that constitute the subjects’ identity.
