ISMAEL DA SILVA OLIVEIRA, Flávio. Gibsonians's Criticisms to Representationist Approach to Visual Perception. Ciênc. cogn. [online]. 2005, vol.6, n.1, pp. 98-108. ISSN 1806-5821.

This study contrasts two perspectives on the animal-environment relation based upon visual perception, the representationist approach and the James Gibson's ecological approach. The representationist hypothesis admits that there is not sufficient information in the environment; accordingly, mental representations and cognitive processes are necessary for the interaction animal-environment via visual perception. Gibson presents new assumptions, such as the ecological concept of information, assuming that the properties of the world are available in the environment and they are detected without cognitive processes. The purpose of this study is to analyze the representationist tradition to visual perception and point out the gibsonian criticisms, as well as to caracterize main ecological principles.
