This article results from a lecture pronounced during the VIth Brazilian Congress of Social Sciences and Health, Rio, november 2013. It deals with the biopsychic vulnerability of people living in contemporary society, which is seen in the text as the consequence of destruction or loss of human ties which are part of the  historical grounds of human culture. This loss conducts to the frailty of population's health, as a consequence of the denial of the other (living human being) as our similar, who needs, to be healthy and happy, to be recognized and respected as we ourselves are. This social process of loss and vulnerability has its source in present capitalist institutions, mainly the economic ones. These institutions have no more links with any ethic values. The article adopts the point of view that ethics is an essential dimension for human existence, and its denial conducts to suffering, disease and death of millions of people, who are getting sick of chronic and acute diseases, and dying, as a consequence of this denial, including the increasing number of suicides each year. Seeing the role of media in convincing and leading people to continuous - and unnecessary - consuming, the article shows a great concern with the present destruction of human lives, but also  with the  possible destruction of life in the planet as a whole, since the efforts of some civil organizations do not seem to affect the ongoing destructive process of physical atmosphere and life in general.
