LEAL, Noemia Soares Barbosa; ALBUQUERQUE, Leonam Amitaf F. P. de  e  ALBERTO, Maria de Fatima Pereira. Autonomy and Life Project in Foster Care Institutions: A Systematic Review. Gerais, Rev. This study aimed to perform a systematic review of Brazilian scientific production on autonomy and life project in foster care institutions for children and adolescents. A search was conducted in the PePSIC, LILACS, SciELO, and Periódicos CAPES databases, following PRISMA guidelines and based on preestablished criteria. As a result, six articles published from 2010 to 2017 were found, predominantly from the field of psychology. The methodological gaps found show weaknesses in quality and theoretical and conceptual inconsistency about autonomy and life project, which affects the way they are operationalized in institutional sheltering. These constructs are procedural and influenced by the mediations of the context, which requires conditions that favor the integral development of the individuals assisted. The authors highlight the challenges of operationalizing them due to the entrenched welfare and tutelage culture. Especially for adolescents, programs for their autonomy are usually restricted to professional preparation and insertion and are marked by occasional and discontinuous actions. Therefore, studies focusing on this issue are needed in order to evaluate the advances and setbacks after the Brazilian Child and Adolescent Statute, contributing to the formulation of a more effective foster care policy and, consequently, integral development.
